Robert (Bob) Sweeney is a successful businessman, entrepreneur, educational leader and non-profit executive. Over the course of his career, he has built organizations from the ground up, led investor groups in the purchase and disposition of real estate as well as athletic events, and thrived in the business arena in the Greater Washington area.
In November, 2022 Sweeney took the helm of the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. As President and CEO of Virginia’s largest Chamber, Sweeney directs the day-to-day activities to achieve our mission related to Advocacy, Access, Knowledge & Infrastructure.
In 2015 Sweeney joined the American University Kogod School of Business team to lead the effort to position Kogod as the worlds’ leading business school focused on the study of the Greater Washington economy. Sweeney was the Founder and President of DC 2024, the regional group assembled to bring the Olympics to Washington DC in 2024. DC2024 made significant strides in bringing the Greater Washington region together to rally around a common goal, to host the world in 2024.
Sweeney is most widely known as the first-ever President/CEO of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance where he began in 2003. He built a prominent board of directors, developed the Alliance mission, created the Sports Collaborative (A separate Foundation) to nurture and grow fledgling youth investment organizations in the sports arena, and molded the Sports Alliance to be a critical organization in Washington’s business community.
Before heading the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Bob was the Vice President of DC Agenda, Vice President of the Greater Washington Initiative, the economic development arm of the Greater Washington Board of Trade and Director of Business Development Office of Economic Development for Arlington, Virginia.
Recently, Bob Sweeney organized the collaboration between Maryland, Virginia and DC for the Amazon HQ2 attraction effort on behalf of the region in service to the two Governors and the Mayor. He was the Managing Partner for the Global Cities Initiative, Greater Washington – a regional effort supported by Brookings and JP Morgan to grow regional economies through exports.
He is a proud Mountaineer from West Virginia University where he has degrees in History and Philosophy.
