LOCAL HISTORY – Meet Governor William Smith

Portrayed by historian David Meisky, Virginia Governor William “Extra Billy” Smith (September 6, 1797 – May 18, 1887) was 30th and 35th Governor of Virginia, and a Major General in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. On his appointment in January 1863, at the age of 65, Smith was the oldest Confederate general to hold field command in the war.   A resident of Fauquier County, Smith was present at early battles of the Civil War including 1st Manassas.
