Under the baton of Music Director, James Villani, the MSO will open its 2019-2020 season with a performance of the marvelous Symphony No. 1 in E minor by American composer Florence Price. She is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. This symphony is the first of the four that she composed. She also wrote numerous other pieces, including choral works, chamber music, and piano concerti, but her orchestra work has been rarely performed. This is a great opportunity to hear this lovely work. The concert program also includes William Walton’s Concerto for Viola, featuring guest soloist David Pedraza, and Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra—“The Thieving Magpie”.  You won’t want to miss this exciting program.
